After a heartbreaking final four loss to the Cortland Dragons during April's National Championship, the Colonials had a lot to prove during last weekend's rematch. Both RMU and Cortland were moved up to Division 1 this season and although it's important to take the season a game at a time, the Colonials definitely had this match-up circled on their calendars.

After a lackluster loss to Temple earlier in the day, RMU needed a strong game to boost their confidence early in the 2016-17 season. And they did just that. The Colonials came out strong and never let up throughout the entire game. Returning players, Kevin Malley, Dan Trunk, Matt Smeltzer and Mark Hilderhoff scored in the first eight minutes of the game and RMU never looked back. Christian Edder and Ryne Baxter scored their first goals in the ECRHA. An 18 save performance by Colonials netminder, Jacob Cowie helped RMU defeat Cortland 11-1.

The next morning, the two clubs faced each other again with the Colonials coming out on top once again. The final score was 9-2. Captain Dan Trunk led the scoring with 3 goals and 3 assists and Assistant Captain Kevin Malley wasn't far behind, ending the game with 1 goal and 3 assists. Sean Lawrence, Nick Brandt, Tyler Dillon, Jesse Zahn and Matt Smeltzer also added goals for the Colonials. Goaltender Jacob Cowie stopped 23 of 25 shots faced.

RMU ends their first weekend in Division 1, 2-1.
